What is a romantasy book?
Romantasy combines fantasy and romance, giving both the magical world and the central relationship an important role in the story. These books may include dragons, fae, vampires, magical powers, dangerous kingdoms, ancient curses, or supernatural creatures alongside a developing romance.
What is the difference between romantasy and fantasy romance?
The terms often overlap. In a fantasy romance, the romantic relationship usually drives the story and receives a satisfying romantic resolution. Romantasy is a broader label commonly used for books that blend a prominent romance with fantasy adventure, magic, politics, or world-building. Some romantasy books lean more romantic, while others lean more heavily into fantasy.
What are some popular romantasy tropes?
Popular romantasy tropes include enemies to lovers, forced proximity, slow burn, forbidden romance, marriage of convenience, magical bonds, hidden identities, morally gray love interests, deadly trials, and rival kingdoms. Many books combine several of these tropes in one very complicated magical relationship.
Which romantasy book should I start with?
Start with the kind of story you already enjoy. Try Fourth Wing for dragon riders and a dangerous academy, Quicksilver for fae, alchemy, and a morally gray hero, or The Serpent and the Wings of Night for vampires and a deadly tournament. Are all romantasy books spicy?
No. Romantasy books range from closed-door and young-adult romance to explicit adult fantasy romance. A book’s amount of romance and on-page spice can vary even within the same series, so it is worth checking individual content and heat-level information before choosing your next read.
Do vampire and paranormal romance count as romantasy?
They can sit beside romantasy even when they are technically categorized as paranormal romance. Books such as Crave, From Blood and Ash, and The Serpent and the Wings of Night appeal to many of the same readers because they combine supernatural worlds, danger, fantasy elements, and central romantic relationships.

Romantasy tropes are familiar story setups that give you a hint about the magical world, romantic tension, and questionable decisions waiting inside.
Trope No. 01
Enemies to Lovers
Two characters begin on opposing sides before all that distrust, rivalry, and possible attempted murder starts looking suspiciously like attraction.
Trope No. 02
Slow Burn
The romantic tension builds through lingering looks, reluctant trust, and hundreds of pages spent waiting for someone to finally admit what is happening.
Trope No. 03
Forced Proximity
A dangerous journey, magical bond, political arrangement, or survival mission forces two characters to remain inconveniently close.
Trope No. 04
Marriage of Convenience
Two characters marry for political or practical reasons and then discover that their supposedly strategic arrangement has developed feelings.
Trope No. 05
Morally Gray Love Interest
Charming, dangerous, and operating according to a highly personal moral code. He might technically be the villain, but apparently we’re hearing him out.

Deadly Trials
The characters must survive dangerous tests, magical competitions, or brutal training while romance becomes one more threat to their carefully made plans.

Forbidden Romance
Duty, family, supernatural rules, rival kingdoms, or the possibility of betrayal makes the relationship a very bad idea—which rarely stops anyone.
Trope No. 08
Magical Bonds
Magic connects characters through shared powers, emotions, thoughts, or fate, making personal boundaries and pretending not to care nearly impossible.
Trope No. 09
Hidden Identity
Someone is concealing their true powers, loyalties, identity, or purpose. Feelings arrive before the truth, ensuring maximum damage when the secret comes out.
